Another minority group within the Algerian political élite favoured private capitalism, but this faction was relatively small because of the weakness of the Algerian bourgeoisie. In fact the majority of the political élite, mainly of petit bourgeois origins, remained hostile to both worker self-management and private capitalism. Instead they favoured the establishment of an economic system dominated by state capitalism. This trend towards state capitalism was substantially reinforced after Ben Bella was deposed by a swift and bloodless military coup d'état led by Boumediène on 19 June 1965, an event celebrated in Algeria as the 'revolutionary resurgence'.
