Example text

In long-exposure observatory photographs and CCD images galaxies appear well delineated in contour, wonderfully detailed internally, and in general so bold that they almost jump out of the picture books at us. Naturally we wish to see – we feel that we should be able to see – similarly clearcut spectacles, the grandest in all the heavens, with our own eyes. But the truth is that galaxies are by several orders of magnitude less sharply defined visually than photographically, for astrophotography vastly exaggerates the contrast (definition) and drastically truncates the dynamic range of the deep-sky images formed by telescopes, thereby severely distorting their brightness profiles.

170x250: Very very faint; extremely low surface brightness. The slightest unconcentrated glow. Roughly round. Large: a little less than a quarter of the field in size. At its edge S is a moderately bright star; WSW is the bright plotted star. 7’ S0– Se: very faint. 170x250: Moderately faint. Evenly moderately concentrated. Round. Small. No involved stars. It makes a long parallelogram with a faint star NW and two stars E; a little ways S is another star. 6 F0 A7 42x60: An unequal pair. 170x250: A moderately close slightly unequal pair.

It is worthy of note that the major emission nebulae show incomparably more internal structure than any galaxy. Their light is full-bodied, luminescent, and intricate, while that of galaxies is sheer, dull, and pretty much formless. Reflection nebulae, on the other hand, are much less consequential than their emission cousins: many are small and faint and tend merely to make their central stars look fog-enshrouded. Open Clusters Open clusters come in a bewildering variety, differing greatly in size, number of stars, brightness of stars, and density.
