In long-exposure observatory photographs and CCD images galaxies appear well delineated in contour, wonderfully detailed internally, and in general so bold that they almost jump out of the picture books at us. Naturally we wish to see – we feel that we should be able to see – similarly clearcut spectacles, the grandest in all the heavens, with our own eyes. But the truth is that galaxies are by several orders of magnitude less sharply defined visually than photographically, for astrophotography vastly exaggerates the contrast (definition) and drastically truncates the dynamic range of the deep-sky images formed by telescopes, thereby severely distorting their brightness profiles.
